This is an agonizing drink, both to prepare and to drink. I got it out of some fancy-pants cocktail book a few years ago, and it's become a standby of sorts for a few of my friends.

You need a tall, skinny glass... sort of an elongated shot glass or cordial glass. The four ingredients are then added in layers. I've found the easiest way to get them to layer are to measure each ingredient out into a liquid measuring cup with a spout, and then pour over the back of a bar spoon into the glass, trying to keep the liquid pouring down in a fan, rather than straight down into the glass (thus mixing with the previous layer). It also helps to make a few at a time... you'll want to be drinking this with friends.

The first layer, at the bottom of the glass, is one part Midori melon liqueur. Second layer is chilled pineapple juice. Third layer is vodka. And the last, top-most layer is Bacardi 151.

Once you've got it all lined up, light the Bacardi and let it burn for a few seconds (no more than 10), and make a quick toast before blowing it out. The idea is to warm up the top of the glass, so there's a nice contrast between toasty, raw 151 proof rum all the way down to cool, refreshing pineapple and a sweet melon finish. If you let it burn too long, you end up with a severely blistered tongue, which no one wants to see.

The idea is to drink it in (to quote the original book) "ONE LUXURIOUS SWALLOW." This is actually really good advice, as the last thing in the world you want is a mouthful of warm 151 and vodka. Well, maybe you want that. It's a free country.

You'll need proper martini glasses and a proper shaker. For vodka, I strongly recommend Belvedere, Goose, Chopin or one of those more expensive brands. You _will_ taste the difference and you will like it. And one other thing: it will be tempting to use crushed ice, but I strongly suggest you make or buy ice cubes and crush them yourself with a hammer, for reasons that I hope will become obvious as you read on.

To begin: Crush some Ice and fill your martini glasses to the rim. Pour the Club Soda over the cracked ice, filling the glasses. Set aside.

Pour a couple ounces of Dry Vermouth into the shaker. Cover and swirl it around a bit. Pour out the Vermouth leaving a coating around the inside of the shaker. Lightly crush some more Ice and fill the shaker about 3/4 of the way. Pour in the ice-cold Vodka, covering the ice. Cap the shaker and shake violently. When you feel you've done it enough, do it some more. It's important that the shaking sliver the ice.

Pour the Ice and Club Soda out of the glasses. Uncap the shaker and pour the drinks.

To start, all the liquid ingredients need to be cold. Fill a red wine glass 1/3 full of Spicy Hot V8, a 1/3 with Clamato, and a jigger (or two ;-) ) of vodka. Add a few splashes of Worcestershire and the hot sauce (I recommend Louisiana brand) and teaspoon of olive juice. Heavily salt and pepper the drink before adding the magic ingredient: Korean Chili Garlic Sauce (1/3 of a teaspoon is way more than enough). You can pick this up at any Asian market and most grocery stores in the ethnic foods section. Stir well and garnish with blue cheese stuffed olives, pearl onions, celery, baby corn, or anything else that floats your boat! Enjoy!

Stock up on limes and cans of mango juice or mango nectar -- while not as fabulous as fresh juice, the latter is much cheaper and easier to find. In order to prepare a decent-sized pitcher of these, start with enough limes to make 1-2 cups of juice (approx 5-6 limes = 1 cup) and work your remaining ingredient proportions from there.

If you haven't prepared simple syrup in advance, whip up a quick batch now by pouring equal amounts of sugar and boiling water into the bottom of your drink pitcher. If you're not good at eyeballing the amount relative to the other ingredients, you might want to do this part in a glass measuring cup, then only pour in as much as you need once you've measured out your juices and vodka.

Next, halve and juice the limes until you have the requisite amount of juice (approx 5-6 = 1 cup). Pour the lime juice into the pitcher. Add your vodka and mango juice or nectar. If you opted to make simple syrup in another container, or have some pre-made, add that now. Stir all ingredients together well. Taste a bit, and add more juice or simple syrup for sweetness if needed.

Next, fill a chilled cocktail shaker halfway with crushed ice and pour the desired drink amount from pitcher; cover and shake vigorously. Set a few cubes of ice into a cocktail glass -- or hell, drinking glass -- and let your libation flow from shaker to glass. Garnish with a spear of fresh mango if you're feeling fancy (or hungry). Bottoms-up!
