The key thing to notice here is there is NO SODA WATER. A correct Old Fashioned is delicious if its flavors haven't been drowned out in soda.

So. Take an old fashioned glass (a short tumbler) and add a cube of sugar (or equivalent amount) and just enough water to dissolve it. Add 3 or 4 heavy dashes of bitters and muddle them together until the sugar is dissolved. (Simple syrup would also have been fine.) Add a large strip of orange peel to the glass and press on it with the muddler or back of a spoon to squeeze out some of the oils. (Don't seriously muddle it or you'll end up with mangled peel in the bottom of the glass.)

That being done, add a couple of ice cubes and about 2 ounces of whiskey, either bourbon or rye. Garnish if desired with an orange slice and/or cherry.

Being made with a base ingredient (Champagne), a sweetener (sugar), and a dash or two of bitters, the recipe for the Champagne Cocktail truly illustrates the basics that were once considered requisite for any drink in the "Cocktail" category.

The Champagne Cocktail is perhaps one of the easiest cocktails to make, with virtually no hassle or even additional equipment or tools. Start off by taking a single sugar cube, and while holding it over the opening of a bottle of Angostura bitters, invert the bottle so that some bitters soaks directly into the sugar. Drop the cube into the bottom of a champagne flute, and then fill the glass with champagne. For a garnish, you can add a dainty spiral of lemon twist

Chill a martini style glass. Dip the rim of the glass into sugar syrup, then push it into the sugar as you would with salt for a margarita. Fill about 1/4 of the glass with your ice/cream mixture. Add the 1 part Amaretto and 1 part Triple Sec, then fill the rest of the way with orange juice. Stir and enjoy.
(Optionally, if you prefer a stronger drink like me, you can throw in one part Vodka)
