This can make most of your cocktails taste so much better than if you use the nasty red stuff that's sold commercially.

Stir together in a saucepan 4 cups of pomegranate juice, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 2 tbsp (30ml) of lemon juice. Bring mix to a boil and boil for 45-55 minutes. To ensure proper consistency, close to the 45 minute mark, take a couple of spoonfuls and place on a plate and allow to cool for a few minutes. Once cooled, tip and plate and watch what it does. It should leave a nice coat of syrup. Check out the consistency of bottled grenadine as a comparison. It doesn't taste great but is the right consistency.

Finally add an ounce of high-proof vodka or grain alcohol as a preservative. Bottle and enjoy. It should survive well in the freezer without freezing solid because of the high sugar content.

This was taken from the Drunkmansguide Blog.

The key thing to notice here is there is NO SODA WATER. A correct Old Fashioned is delicious if its flavors haven't been drowned out in soda.

So. Take an old fashioned glass (a short tumbler) and add a cube of sugar (or equivalent amount) and just enough water to dissolve it. Add 3 or 4 heavy dashes of bitters and muddle them together until the sugar is dissolved. (Simple syrup would also have been fine.) Add a large strip of orange peel to the glass and press on it with the muddler or back of a spoon to squeeze out some of the oils. (Don't seriously muddle it or you'll end up with mangled peel in the bottom of the glass.)

That being done, add a couple of ice cubes and about 2 ounces of whiskey, either bourbon or rye. Garnish if desired with an orange slice and/or cherry.
