alternate ways to make this drink
Alchoholic's Mojito by method
Place a few mint leaves in the bottom of a shaker. Add one part simple syrup. Mash that bizness up. Fill the shaker with ice. Add 3 parts premium rum (orinoco, zaya, etc.). Add the juice of one lime. Shake it for 15-30 seconds. Pour into an ice filled glass and top off with some soda water. Stir. Enjoy.

bubble In my opinion Zaya is too nice for mixing. Besides, I'll go through way too much for my wallet to survive if I mix it. Bacardi Anejo or Barbancourt make for a great drink without breaking the bank. el jefe (657 days ago)
bubble Maybe I'm an alchohlic, but I prefer this drink when the soda water is more of a 'topping off' than a major ingredient. I agree with the others that muddling the lime is too bitter. I experimented using a high-end rum (Zaya) and found that more rum, less soda was definitely better. method (717 days ago)

This is a great summer drink! I don't like muddling the rind - it DOES leave a bitter taste and I think that's not necessary for this drink. Also, I've found that people I serve this to prefer that the mint be (mostly) strained out of the drink. No big chunks of leaves. I even planted my own mint garden just for this drink! briande (918 days ago)

I would only trust a southern belle such as Laurie to provide a tasty Mojito recipe! natx (980 days ago)
bubble This is my favorite summer drink! And I think this sounds like the real way these are made. francisco (980 days ago)

mojitos rule! If you muddle the rind too much, wouldn't it make it taste bitter? jacob (1039 days ago)
bubble It's important to include some lime rind when you muddle to get the oils from them involved. also a real muddler works way better than a spoon, and shaking works better than stirring. steev (1063 days ago)
