You need a tall, skinny glass... sort of an elongated shot glass or cordial glass. The four ingredients are then added in layers. I've found the easiest way to get them to layer are to measure each ingredient out into a liquid measuring cup with a spout, and then pour over the back of a bar spoon into the glass, trying to keep the liquid pouring down in a fan, rather than straight down into the glass (thus mixing with the previous layer). It also helps to make a few at a time... you'll want to be drinking this with friends. The first layer, at the bottom of the glass, is one part Midori melon liqueur. Second layer is chilled pineapple juice. Third layer is vodka. And the last, top-most layer is Bacardi 151. Once you've got it all lined up, light the Bacardi and let it burn for a few seconds (no more than 10), and make a quick toast before blowing it out. The idea is to warm up the top of the glass, so there's a nice contrast between toasty, raw 151 proof rum all the way down to cool, refreshing pineapple and a sweet melon finish. If you let it burn too long, you end up with a severely blistered tongue, which no one wants to see. The idea is to drink it in (to quote the original book) "ONE LUXURIOUS SWALLOW." This is actually really good advice, as the last thing in the world you want is a mouthful of warm 151 and vodka. Well, maybe you want that. It's a free country. |
